Starting in November 2009, I will be a postdoc at UC Berkeley, working with Maneesh Agrawala and Ravi Ramamoorthi. I did my PhD at UJF. My advisors were Joëlle Thollot and François X. Sillion. I've also spent 6 months in Seattle as an intern at Adobe's Advanced Technology Labs under the supervision of David Salesin, and 3 months in Cambridge at MIT CSAIL under the supervision of Frédo Durand and Sylvain Paris.

Research themes

My work deals with non photorealistic rendering (NPR), and more generally image synthesis and image processing. The topic of my PhD is the management of abstraction in image synthesis. The goal is to remove, enhance or manipulate details in an image to make it more meaningful.

Watercolor rendering

A first part of my work has been devoted to watercolor rendering from pictures, 3D models or videos. The results of this research have been published in NPAR 2006, SIGGRAPH 2007 and I3D 2009. This work on watercolor rendering has been initiated by a collaboration with the french cartoon studio Broceliande. As a result, a Mental Ray plug-in called Graphanim has been developped by David Lanier. Finally, we have presented several aspects of this research at Imagina 2008, which led to an article by Noriko Kurachi in the Japanese magazines CGWORLD and FDI. Noriko Kurachi also wrote an article on the research done in the Artis research team, in the Eizoshimbun journal.

Diffusion curves

In the second part of my PhD, I have been interested in edge based image representations. We show in our NPAR 2007 paper how such a representation can facilitate image simplification and stylisation. We introduce in our SIGGRAPH 2008 paper a new edge based vectorial primitive, called Diffusion Curve. Diffusion curves facilitate the creation and editing of smooth vector graphics, and can be automatically extracted from a bitmap image.

Intrinsic images

Finally, in the third part of my PhD, I have explored advanced editing of photographs. In our SIGGRAPH Asia 2009 paper, we propose a user-assisted method to decompose an image into its reflectance and illumination components. Once separated, these components can be manipulated independently to perform photograph editing such as re-texturing or re-lighting.
